About GMHS

Excel in Mind, Body, and Character George Mason High School is located in the City of Falls Church, in Northern Virginia, less than ten miles west of the nation's capital, Washington, DC. The City of Falls Church became an independent city in 1949 for the primary purpose of being able to establish its own school system. George Mason High School is the only high school serving the Falls Church City community.

  • With a student body of about 800 students in grades 9-12, George Mason High School is one of the smallest public high schools in the Washington Metropolitan area.
  • George Mason High School has been recognized for Excellence in Education by the Department of Education.

  • George Mason High School was the first high school in Virginia to offer the rigorous International Baccalaureate program, and today approximately 84% of George Mason juniors and seniors participate in the program.
  • More than 90% of George Mason graduates attend either four-year or two-year colleges.
  • George Mason consistently has been ranked among the most challenging high schools in the nation (Newsweek Magazine). The school is often cited among the most challenging high schools in the Washington Metropolitan area (The Washington Post).

Our collective mission is to support our children as they move steadily toward being caring, balanced, and open-minded thinkers who continually inquire about the individual and collective roles they play in our global community. We foster an environment where our children are actively learning to serve themselves and others as principled risk-takers, with the responsibility to communicate a bond throughout cultures and generations. George Mason students work to become knowledgeable and reflective citizens connected to the ever-changing world around them.
