Semester Exams

When a course calls for a semester exam, the exam will be administered primarily during a two week period (1/7-1/17).

Semester exams have been updated to reflect the specific and differentiated requirements associated with all courses. In years past, we have required teachers to adhere to a 40/40/20 semester grade weight policy. As we continue to improve our current grading practices where high stakes assessments are meaningful based on the developmentally appropriate level of the course, we no longer require a set schedule for exams. For example, a 20% semester exam in a 9th grade course may not be appropriate for a student but a 20% exam in an IB course might better prepare students for the post-secondary level. Teachers may consider alternatives to semester exams such as culminating activities that measure a student's understanding of the material. We have seen a decline in the number of semester exams, particularly at the 9th and 10th-grade level. No student will be required to take more than 2 exams in one day. If a student is concerned about the number of assessments they have during a particular week, they are encouraged to notify their counselor and we will work on a remedy.
