This year the GMHS International Dinner and Personal Project Showcase will be held on Wednesday, March 13, at 5:30 p.m. in the Mustang Café and both gyms. The International Dinner is a "pot luck" event hosted annually by the GMHS International Club and sponsored by the PTSA and ESOL/World Language staff. Open to all, it is a casual and fun celebration of our diverse Falls Church community with a delicious array of ethnic foods and entertainment with an international flair. Following the dinner, the Personal Project Showcase is presented as the GM Sophomores highlight the individual interests and efforts of their chosen projects. The IB MYP Personal Project is a culminating opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and creative outcome and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP. Family and community members are encouraged to view the wide variety of projects in the gyms and to talk with our impressive students about how these works were created. Last year's guests were REALLY amazed! The whole evening is a fabulous family event and is a heart-warming celebration of the wonderful community we have at George Mason, and in Falls Church City as a whole.
Dinner attendees should bring a favorite entrée, side dish or salad for 8-10 people to share. Disposable containers are advised or please label your dish if you want it returned.  If you do not have time to cook, bring a family size dish from one of your favorite local restaurants!! Do you love to cook? After dinner there will be entertainment including personal project performances. Can you dance, sing, or play an instrument? Is there a song/dance/demonstration from your country that you would like to share? Is there a song or poem about global awareness/world peace that you would like to perform? Raudenbush Scholar Prize for Spanish Language
Learning 2019


What is it?

A prize of $250 for five MEH and GMHS students in grades 8-12 (one for each grade level) AND one prize of $400 to be awarded a senior student currently enrolled in Spanish and passionate about learning the language. This Scholarship can be used for anything; however, winners may want to use it to help cover expenses to advance knowledge of Spanish language and cultures. Past recipients have used funds for academic research, travel, volunteering and summer immersion camps at language schools.  Recipients can only receive this award ONCE. Past winners are ineligible.

Winners will be announced at the International Dinner on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2019.

How can you win?

1.  Obtain an unofficial copy of your transcript from Ms. Cortez in the Student Services office.

2.  Write a typed 175-200 word composition in English on how knowing Spanish will impact your life in the future.

3.  Type the following information on a cover sheet for your application:

  • Your first and last name.

  • Your grade level.

  • Your Spanish level and teacher.

  • Your email address.

  • Your cell phone number.

  • Your pledge that you have not received this award in the past.

  • Your pledge that you will attend the International Dinner on March 13, 2019 to find out if you won!

4.  Turn in the completed application (Cover page + 3 photocopies of your 175-200 word typed composition + unofficial copy of transcript) to Ms. Garcia by the deadline.

Applications due by Friday, March 1, 2019.  APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE!

Computer Image
All student laptops must be in a case. Please encourage your child to keep the laptop case handed out to them earlier this year on their computer at all times.  The reasons for this case are as follows;
  • protect the device from damages
  • protect this investment for the life of the computer (4 years at GM and 3-4 more years at Thomas Jefferson Elementary)
  • protect the resale of laptops (will sell after/up to 8 years of use) 
 Remember: There is a $50 damage fee.

Annual Career Fair
April 12

Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School is celebrating career exploration with the Annual Career Fair event on April 12th from 7:00-11:20 a.m in the gym at MEHMS.  Mr. Sowers (School Counselor at MEH) and Ms. Connelly (Business and Community Partnerships) are seeking volunteers to meet and greet middle school students to talk about their occupations.  If you are interested in volunteering or presenting or know someone that might be interested in participating in the career fair, please fill out the registration form and FCCPS volunteer form.  Our students truly benefit from listening to volunteer’s life experiences and expertise in their respected fields.

  • It is highly recommended that juniors take the SAT and/or ACT at least once in the spring. Please find below information regarding SAT and ACT registration:

  • Counselors will meet with juniors through classes in the late spring and explain the college-application process.
  • The Counselors encourage students to sign on regularly to their Family Connections/Naviance account. This is the way we send emails containing important information – meetings, college rep. visits, appointments, etc.  
World Language Testing

During April and May, all students who are not taking an IB or AP exam this year and who are in levels 1 and 3 of French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, will take The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) online proficiency assessment. The AAPPL test was developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Test results will provide data on the speaking, reading, listening and writing proficiency based on national standards. It will also provide valuable feedback to students on their language learning progress as they move through various levels of study.
