Welcome Back!

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Mustang Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! As we launch into this new year, we hope to emphasize our goals of IB for all, a caring community and culture, and a focus on an equitable learning environment where every students’ needs are met. We rely heavily on relationships between students, faculty, and parents to achieve these goals. Thank you in advance for willingness to join Team Mason and work collaboratively to ensure the success of your child.

We continue to strive to meet students’ social and emotional needs in creative ways. Wild Horse Wednesday begins its second year with exciting updates. Based on student, staff, and parent feedback, we have developed a four-year continuum to differentiate weekly sessions based on grade-level needs. Freshmen will participate in the nationally recognized mental health curriculum, Behind Happy Faces, developed by advocate Ross Szabo. Sophomores will focus on personal development through the MYP Personal Project, juniors will contribute to a global society through service learning, and seniors will prepare for the future with college and career exploration. Popular “Mustang Rodeos”, GMHS Speaker Series, and other whole-school activities help make GM the vibrant and caring environment to learn and grow.

Look behind our building and you will see a giant hole with the beginnings of structural walls for our new George Mason High School. This exciting project means some growing pains, and changes to parking and traffic flows. Please take a moment to review the New Parking and Traffic Pattern website. Check the hashtag #buildingtogether for updates from the FCCPS community throughout the year.

Thank you for all of your support as we look forward to an incredible school year.

Senior Parking

On the first day of school, all seniors parked in the Student Parking lots must display a student parking pass.

Senior parking passes are still available. This year, we are encouraging seniors to carpool. For any two seniors who purchase one spot together, they will receive a $100 discount. Individual Senior parking passes will be sold for $250. "Carpool" parking passes will be sold for $150. All students must provide a valid driver's license at the time of purchase. Parking will be located along Haycock Road as well as the "island" of the upper lot at GM (Blocks 1 and 2 in gray in the visual aid below). Senior parking will be in these two lots only.

GMHS Parking Plan Visual Aid

Seniors can pick up parking pass forms from Ms. Flanigan in the Main Office or Ms. Baldo in the Finance Office from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. until September 6th.  All parking pass forms must be filled out and signed by the student and the parent/guardian and returned to the office with either a check made payable to GMHS or cash. You must have a valid driver's license at the time the parking pass is requested. All fines/fees must be cleared before a parking pass is issued. Please note that students run the risk of being towed if they do not display the current 2019-2020 student parking decal on their vehicles.

Students who are unable to purchase a GMHS student parking decal can park for a daily fee at the Northern Virginia Graduate Center (if spaces are available) or the Metro lot.
